Is working at a hostel as awesome as you think it is?

Picture

Yes.  Yes it is.

Hello, Buenas, Bionjour, & Guten Tag!

We are Galileo Hostel in San Jose, Costa Rica and if you're on this page, you're probably wondering what goes into joining our international staff of fun and funky individuals.

Here's a little bit about us:

We're an active bunch of backpackers ourselves who all live and work onsite so we consider ourselves a pretty dysFUNctional family.  If you're not familiar with San Jose, we're in one of the best neighborhoods, loaded with restaurants and bars, and two major embassies right across the street (UK & Israel).  We're also bordered by the city's largest park complete with brand new international Soccer Stadium (complete in Oct. 2010).

We've garnered a pretty good reputation for some of the most epic parties in San Jose, and we're known throughout Central America for creating a fun, colorful, and laid back environment, where backpackers really feel at home and can sometimes end up crashing with us for a month or more.  We've also got an awesome puppy who's grown up around backpackers and regularly wears a cape or toga around the hostel.

Still reading?

Word.  You probably want to know what we need from you.  In a nutshell, your soul.  No, not really your soul, but if you've ever been in a hostel before (which you should have if you're reading this) then you know how much fun it is to be in a hostel full of people who actually want to be there.  One of the best things about a hostel, by definition it's filled with people from all sorts of backgrounds, which makes for AWESOME music jams, and bar games.  That said, with so many people needing so many different things, teamwork is essential to smooth operation (which means more time to hang with the guests and drink beer).  So if working well with others makes you nautious, then aside from having a really dificult time on your little league team, you most likely won't find a position here (though if you don't like people, you should really reconsider a career in hosteling, there are A LOT of people).

Working here is going to be different everyday, you never know when the naked blue lady is going to walk in the door or a shower is going to explode (neither of those things has ever happened).  So while experience in the hospitality industry is awesome, we need people who aren't going to freak out and curl up in the corner when something doesn't go as planned, cause nothing ever goes as planned.  But feel confident enough to tackle tricky situations, and make decisions without consulting three other people first.

Have I lost anyone yet?

No, you're still here?  Cool, here's what you get out of the Galileo Experience:
