you know, when i was younger, i used to have this poster hanging in my room. across the top it said, "just in case you need an excuse to party" and then it listed pseudo-party-worthy events for every date of the year. you know what wasn't on there... deportation day. the day they stole our driveway. the morning started out like any other: coffee, catching up, buying some coloring books from the kids on the corner, checking around outside the building, and realizing that at some point the previous night, someone up and stole the driveway. this was either the most enterprising backpacker in the world, or the world's strongest crack-head. here in CR, driveways aren't the gloriously immobile concrete slabs they are the states... here, they're an eight-foot by two-foot, wrought iron grate, laid atop the "gutter" (an 18 inch trench between the street and the sidewalk, capable of swallowing the entire front wheel of a car). now, if i had to makea list of "most likely things to steal from a hostel" the DRIVEWAY would fall somewhere between toe-nail clippings and a beer-can-turned-ashtray. Our property manager, however, seemed to think this was quite normal. dura vida. -mer 6000 Mother F'n Horses! 01/15/2009

Several of our friends staying here decided that with the coldest beers in Costa Rica close at hand, the painting sounded like a fun option to lounging around the tv room, or, who knows... maybe playing with the cute chickens. The following photos are from that night, although I'm still working out the best way to use the camera what with webbed feet and all... First Post! 12/10/2008
This is mom and dad, they are silly. I think this picture makes it pretty obvious who wears the pants in the household and who wears the grass skirt and wigs. They are happy in this picture because they just finished painting the outside of the house. Come and see it! | dura vida.
after months of saying we'd do this, i finally set it up.
what follows is the account of two kids, runnin from the cold up in New England, who were born to own a hostel in San Jose, Costa Rica. ...dura vida. Mer.a.k.a. "the girlfriend" Brian.a.k.a.
